   Read Write Inc.

At Castletown we use the Read, Write Inc. phonics programme to get our children off to a flying start with their Literacy skills.

RWI is a highly regarded Literacy programme which has made a huge difference to our children’s literacy skills which can be demonstrated by our Y1 Phonics Screening tests results which show that our children are well above national results.

Children start the programme in Nursery and are then grouped in terms of their reading ability, ensuring all children access texts at the correct level. Sessions take place daily and incorporate focussed teaching of sounds, handwriting, reading and writing.

Once children have completed the RWI programme they then access a Literacy curriculum based on age related expectations as set out in the National Curriculum. At Castletown we adopt a novel based approach to Literacy where each year group studies all elements of Literacy through a class novel.

We use a range of different reading materials to encourage children to develop a love of reading and become confident and fluent readers. Our core scheme is ‘Oxford Reading Tree.’
